An effective way of dealing with a sense of discomfort or distress is to choose to accept the feeling without attempting to change it. So, if we are sad, to allow ourselves to be sad, if overwhelmed to allow ourselves to be overwhelmed.
Usually if we are unhappy, angry or bored, we take up a critical position towards ourselves. It is this feeling of criticism that perpetuates and even worsens how we feel. If, on the other hand, we give ourselves permission to experience the negative feelings, we remove the conflict inside ourselves. Sooner or later, in the absence of self-criticism, the unpleasant feelings will dissipate (or disappear).
